History behind our Dining Room:
Originally built as a packhouse around 1909, in Gold Point, NC, this building was later bought at a public auction, relocated and renovated to become "Vanderford's General Store." The store was owned and operated by the late Jim Johnson, whom hired a Mr. Bill Bemis, native to Massachusetts, to paint huge murals high up on the stores walls. During 1947-48, Mr. Bemis would get off work and come paint the murals, with his "secret mixture" of paint, overnight. The most famous of the works is the "1940's fox hunt" portraying the Johnson Family during a hunt. The buildings structure and murals were all that remained of the store, after all the original artifacts had been bought by the NC Museum of History, the structure went on auction. In 1990, the building was purchased and relocated to it's current location, by the Roberson brothers. They wanted to preserve the murals and provide themselves with a new "main" dining room, for their restaurant "The Filling Station." And so, it still stands til this day, as our Historic Dining Room!
